This piece deals with my Art Studio Concentration of Childhood and Nostalgia; two motifs I am excited to work with. It is also painted on a thick slice of handmade paper that I made from used scraps, leaves, and old newspaper. (Shred the material, submerge into a tray of water; blend; pour, and let dry). (The results are quite interesting).

I also incorporated physical lego bricks as a sculptural moment in the lower right corner. Keeping the dream alive - I worked primarily in lego for many years.

I don't want to know how many miles this heap has seen - it had its moments. I opened the garage the other day and found the rear tire flat and I have no intention of fixing it. I love biking, but do not love this bicycle. Its weight lended itself nicely to downhill quests, though was horrendous in almost any other situation.

The matte black spray paint and milk-crate mod will be missed.

I always liked the beginning of an art piece more than any other stage - the early construction and execution. I'll show you the production of the Plastic Monsters from this winter.

I've wanted to release my own resin/designer toy for a while now, the challenge of the project was prototyping for me. The silicone mold-making and subsequent plastic-casting went smoothly. My original was a combination of sculpted/carved air-dry and polymer clay, finished in urethane.

I'll be developing the next run of toys soon, and perhaps then I'll detail a How-To post, consisting of both imperative commands and suggestions/tips on how to bring your toy-world dreams into reality.

Until then, here is a smattering of process shots:

Debauchery

Debauchery - the ubiquitous and broad theme for a pair of blank canvas shoes, soon to be defiled. I'm thinking about the concept now, slated to be displayed in Dark World Gallery's next Skate of the Art Show.
The collective work is auctioned for a local charity, and has featured artistic spawn on skateboard decks in the past years.
In the meantime - there is much work to do! The studio is a mess...

Art All-State

Breaking artistic bounds in project rooms, filled with young artistic think-tanks. The reults were admirable. More pictures soon.:

The 24th annual Art All State went down last weekend, a gathering/smattering of high school juniors in a communal exploration of installation art. Trippy. The event was well-organized, a symphony of left and right-brained balance. We were well fed, slept in some pretty spartan college dorms, and filled entire studios of the Worcester Art Museum with visceral and challenging artwork. Each team worked with three materials, one of which is a surprise.

We had soda cans, sheets/blankets, and our surprise material were these plastic baby pouches...for lack of a better description. We quickly disected the baby pouches, yielding clear plastic, and strong nylon cords. This array of materials enabled us to take on an engaging concept; that is the Childhood Tent. A fortress of youthful innocence, fabricated entriely out of your mothers fabric. Despite the safety of the fortress - a tentacled monster lurks beyond the plastic windows! Ahhhhh!

Toil

I've been involved with a multitude of local events and projects as of late, many of which I covered here. I'm also currently preparing for a March 5th art show!

I had a lot of fun taking on work at the Worcester Art Museum (I helped out at this years hectic First Night Workshop) and trying out some freelance writing for Worcester Magazine.

I also found myself doing a live painting session on the Palladium balcony in November, to the sounds of EPICA below.

Overall; just taking in good music & art. 2011 will be fruitful, and I have announcements to make soon. In the mean-time, here's some new pieces laying around the studio:

National Portfolio Day

At the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, on November 7th...

"National Portfolio Day consists of representatives from regionally accredited colleges and universities, which are members of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design."

Sometimes criticism from a stranger carries more weight than the everyday counsel. Like all good advice - it should be taken with a grain of salt. We waited in line for Mass
Art and RISD, and as you can see - it was a long wait. The schools have two different vibes:

MassArt - offered me no critique, rather a brief commentary and talked to me about college admissions/preparation. (I graduate in 2012). I'm attracted to MassArt because of its looser style, affordability, and sort of group mentality.

R.I.S.D. - offered a refreshing, thorough critique that was exactly what I needed to hear. My reviewer brought up some solid points:

Slow Down ("Don't drink coffee" -Not sure if that was literal)
Show mastery of color through simplicity - "less is more"
More observation and work from life
etc.

I was vaguely aware of all this, but seeing a seasoned professional use examples from my work is very helpful. However - I can think of even better ways to spend $208,420. Hows that for a grain of salt? I also took note of MassArt hiking up its costs: roughly $40,000. What's up?

Lighting the Community - Public Art Project

I'm one of five artists commissioned to paint these giant fiberglass sculptures! I only have one week to create something to the effect of my above sketch - contemplating Worcester past and present, and hopefully conjuring a sustainable future. My sketch is pretty loose, but I made a point of incorporating some Worcester notables such as printer Isaiha Thomas and industrialist George Crompton. The piece will also feature some earthy textures, unspoken crowds, hilly vistas, and familiar 3-deckers. (The usual.)

EDIT:

Yesterday was the big kickoff event for the CFL Light Bulb campaign. City officials, representatives, and Sidewalk Sam spoke to the crowd that formed at Worcester Common. There's info in todays paper, and some early coverage in Worcester Magazine.

The City of Worcester expressed enthusiasm for green-initiatives.
Congratulations to the four other artists: Lennie Peterson, Todd Rawley, Sue Champeny, and Eamon Gillen. We had "less than a week, so we had to hustle and make it happen."

This is one of four exciting graphics I've prepared for Hat On, Drinking Wine's upcoming album, entitled "Plastic Flowers". I've taken a liking to the "rootsy rock and roll" style since listening to the early mixes. I can't wait to get my own copy, and officially jam out to "Practical in Love", "These Stories", and ofcourse, "Plastic Flowers".
Designing an album was a first for me, and I'm up for more music-oriented art.

I just returned from a meeting with Congressman James McGovern, who is noted for protesting the Darfur Conflict.

One of the latest additions to his Mechanic St. Office is a Darfur related painting I created a while back. (I have no photos of the work). He had good things to say about the painting, and liked the consience behind it, which I appreciate. (Thanks to Tim H. and Joe M. for bringing it all together).

C-Town Monster

The 'Freaks' theme seemed to fit the bill for a lot of my work, I had several submissions this time around.

I've been thinking about wallpaper recently, and remembering all the times I've spent chiseling away old, gross wallpaper. For the Aurora Gallerie's next show, "Hangin on the Wall", artists are invited to create interpretations of wallpaper and expand upon Worcester's manufacturing history.
Below is my in-progress piece, built from stretched cotton tees over board, and using multi-media to pay homage to wallpaper style.

Tape Man the Third

IN PROGRESS, the diabolical construction of Tape Man the Third.
Tape Man is a local phenomenon that got started a few summers ago, and the mannequins have since spread. (We drew inspiration from tape-cast artist Mark Jenkins.) I've only caught glimpses of the local spinoffs, although competition drives Tape Man further into the realm of installation art. Tape Man the 3rd (with the help of model Alicia) will be built from three layers of 2.2 mm packing tape, with colored duct tape accents. The life-like plastic cast will be stuffed, limb by limnb, with shredded paper.
Traditionally, Tape Man uses urbanity as a stage - wearing clothes, drawing crowds and exploiting art. This Tape Man will take on a new role as an indoorsman, seated and trapped by his own silence.
I only have a small window of time to assemble Tape Man at school each day; rumor has it that he will debut at Night of the Arts.
Today I offer you snapshots of the newly casted torso and arms. Stay tuned for the unveiling of Tape Man No.3, and witness life through the eyes of a packing tape assemblage.

Skull Stickers

It seems like every time I look down, there's a skull printed or stitched onto my clothes.
This is part of a short-lived sticker campaign I started late last March, which I'm rekindling with a large art piece.
One of the issues I initially encountered was WEAK ADHESIVE. The stickers would disapear from the hands of a passerby or even a slight breeze. (It is March after all.)
The process involves hand stenciling mixed, bright colors onto sticker paper. (Spray paint works well.) After mass-producing the skull shapes, I silkscreen the skull in black as a second layer. They're then cut and distributed.
Skulls are a good motif, they represent rebirth in Mexico and death every where else.

Circus Freaks

W.H. Johnson, or "Zip the What Is It?", lived a long life as a P.T. Barnum sideshow freak. "The American people love to be humbugged..."
He wore a furry suit and spent a lot of time playing the violin in a cage, it's apparent that times have changed. The conception of this piece has been moving quickly, I stretched a piece of thick canvas over a 12"x14" board. It's since been covered in oil, spray paint, collage and transfer (Whatever it takes).

Charles Olson, in acrylic, enamel, and colored pencil on canvas, 24" x 36"

Charles Olson (1910-1970) was an important poet and writer born right here in Worcester, Ma. He was 6'8", and coined the term 'postmodern' in a letter.

Olson's 100th birthday passed recently, and I was commissioned this portrait to coincide with an event at Clark University. There are no color photographs of Olson, (as far as I can tell), which was the challenge in this piece. The painting has alot of interest in the backround and finish, I used golden spray paint, resist effects, glazing, e.t.c. (Note: picture quality is rough.)

Tobor is a blue robot that I assembled using acrylic, goauche, marker, and silkscreen on found wood. The piece also features a custom made frame out of I-hooks and steel tubing.

It'll be on display/sale at Space 242 Gallery in Boston, in the I...You...We...ROBOT Show. Opening January 29th, pieces from over 70 artists will be for sale both online and through the gallery.

This was a painting I created a few months ago, on top of a vintage oil portrait. What was once a pleasant, hangable artwork is now a collaged and spray painted icon of insanity. It hung at the Aurora Gallery for a few months in the Fire & Ice show.

Here is a progress shot of a more refined piece I'm working on. It incorporates a hi-res collaged photo and endless layers of dry and wet media. Some exploratory themes include unity, perception, and calligraphy. Once it's finished, it'll be one of two submissions for the 2010 Boston Globe / Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. After last years anti-climactic "Honorable Mention", I'm ready for the big W again this year. I'll post the resulting artwork and nomination sometime soon.

This is my submission for the : Post This! Rock Posters show at Space 242 Gallery in Boston, MA.

Matt and Kim are a cool band, I first heard them years ago when they probably still had day jobs.

As of right now, I'll be printing five editions. Two are for sale in Boston, two are for sale in Worcester, and one for the 'ol portfolio.

I think they'll be 12"x18", I'm heading to the copy center in a bit.

At school, I usually keep a pile of graph / lined paper with me for drawing. Often I endup doing environments in perspective, and tacking them up or selling them for bake sale money. The one I added to the poster is unfinished, but I thought it brought a nice dimension to it.
The drawing (so far) features over 120 individual windows, a severely misplaced street lamp, a toy Godzilla trying to eat a meal, two Soviet era tanks, a muffin factory, a pub, a crosswalk leading into a dark alley, a port-o-potty, and tons of other random details that help me and my peers cope with boring classes. (Apologies for the rough photo quality) :

I went to Boston recently, and found myself in the Urban Outfitters at Faneuil Hall. It's a pretty hip store, they carry loads of stuff that everyone wants; including the Lomographic Fisheye Camera 2.0 .

Famous for their wide, distorted shots, the Fisheye enticed me as a first-time photographer. So far I've developed 1 roll of trippy, spherical 35mm film.
There are some great discerning features on the camera : my favorites are probably the "B" setting, (allowing multiple exposures on one frame /photo) and the fisheye view-finder. It set me back a few bucks, but overall; a cool thing to have. --I'll post some of the resulting pictures soon.

Spider Gates

Quaker Cemetery is a private cemetery in Leicester, Massachusetts. Located near Worcester Regional Airport, the cemetery is known as Spider Gates Cemetery after its wrought iron gates' spider-like motif. Some highlights include leaves rustling without wind, scandalism, and portals into the netherworld.

Rumors are as follows: there is a raised area surrounded by trees called the Altar. Satanists have permission to use it. There are runes etched in the nearby rock walls. There is a rectangular patch of thick, soft moss; the place where grass doesn't grow. A strange white substance oozes from the ground. There have been a number of confirmed hangings and killings.

So without hesitation, me and seven others took the 15 minute car ride and soon found ourselves hiking through a dirt path leading to the cemetery. There are two cast iron gates that provide the entrance to the grounds. One is original, one is a copy. This is apparent as one opened quietly and with ease, while the other creaked loudly. Despite the complete darkness, we found the place where grass doesn't grow, Kettle Brook, the hanging tree, and the very eerie raised altar. The mood was certainly there. After we were satisfied, we gathered some wood from the grounds and made a fire back home.

Anyway, as I sit here, recollecting last nights details, I can tell you that Spider Gates isn't an evil place. Rather, a site of interest in a forested setting. Don't worry though; we'll be back.

***Also, it turns out, none of my photos from the night came out properly. However, there was a night vision video made. I plan on watching it tomorrow.***

Channel 3 Interview !

A few days ago, I went down to the Worcester Charter tv Channel 3 Studios, and had a nice interview with Jen Roy (filling in for Hank Stolz). It aired at 6 am and 8 am on Friday, on the second segment after City Councilor Kate Toomey. A few blogs earlier I elaborated on the process, but the experimentation has only begun. Proceeds from this print will fuel future printmaking endeavors, keeping them unique and affordable. Each edition is signed, dated, and numbered. Number one is on canvas and will be hanging at the Aurora Gallery soon, but number 2 through 5 so far are still available, as I think I'm only making 20. When I feel like it's time, or if I'm bored, the stencil will be scrubbed and the designs destroyed. (brutally...) But if it does catch on a little bit, there will be many more to come folks. Journeys: Stops Along the Way...

ArtsWorcester's Aurora Gallery's (660 Main St., Worcester MA) next exhibition is (you guessed it) Journeys: Stops Along the Way. Commemorating their 30 year anniversary, the assignment was to submit 1 piece from your early career, and one piece done recently. Since I'm in the midst of my "early career", I'm sending in a crayon drawing from 2nd grade and something from my new cache of art. After a successful Biennial event, I think this show is worth checking out: the crayon rendering is very symbolic. And the new piece, silkscreen and acrylic on canvas, offers a taste of some of my new $5 prints I'm now at work on. (more on that later)

. . . Working on some poster / art print ideas, and I'm experimenting with different silkscreening techniques. After collecting old magazine pages, political images, and random stuff, I create a quick compositional collage, then tear it apart and rebuild it digitally.

So I got everything ready for the final burning when i found out that my faithful light bulb had died. It turns out, Photoflood Bulbs only have 2 hours of life. Pity.

Shoes. This was a cool study painting from school, and the challenge was to paint my shoes using a limited palette. (My shoes are black, by the way.) Still, pretty cool...it hung in the Worcester Public Library for a few weeks.

This was one of two pieces I submitted for the ArtsWorcester Biennial show, which runs to the 29th. Although I had some help with the title, no artistic creation o' mine has generated this much heat. I've gotten several offers but I'm hanging on to it for the time being.

As for the creative process; I had a 16 x 20 inch frame assembled, and stretched on the funky gold cloth. I also threw in some silkscreened accents of Mr. Barack Obama's upbringings and surroundings. I'm satisfied with it.
